Former Town CFO Arrested

Multiple Charges include “Tampering with or Fabricating Evidence”

Earlier today, through social media, the Fairfield Police Department reported the Arrest of the Former Town of Fairfield CFO, Robert Mayer, on charges of Burglary in Third Degree, Larceny in Third Degree, and Tampering with or Fabricating Physical Evidence.

According to the warrant, the charges stem from Mr. Mayer removing files from his former office on January 16th, one day after he was fired from his position with the Town of Fairfield. Among the files removed were documents sought by the State’s Attorney. Specifically, on January 14th, 2020 the new Town Attorney, James Baldwin, had sent an email to Mr. Mayer stating:

“Bob,

The State’s attorney needs to see all fillings and correspondence concerning the FEMA application/denial for Penfield Pavilion. Please put together at your earliest convenience.

Thanks, Jim”

Apparently, Mr. Mayer had provided the Town’s Attorney with several documents related to Penfield Pavilion FEMA situation but, disturbingly, there were additional documents that had not been turned over. Among the files found to have been removed from Mr. Mayer’s former office were documents sought by the State’s attorney that had not been turned over.

Additionally, the arrest warrant describes a folder recovered that contained information related to the Fill Pile case – it states: “This contained material concerning Fairfield Police Case #: 17-25059, the “Julian Case”. It contained information concerning DPW Audit’s and contamination clean up estimates. It also contained information from environmental companies regarding potential contaminated sites in Town.”

Penfield Pavilion has long been the subject of speculation as one of the largest potential recipients of Fill from the Fill Pile. Documentation previously posted by Fairfield First included speculation that in excess of 5,200 tons of fill may have been dumped at the Penfield Pavilion site. This would cause one to question why, during the Public Relations driven campaign of the previous administration, were so many sites that had no contaminates tested and reported on as ‘clear’ while test reports on the Penfield Pavilion site still haven’t been publicly posted? Why would a site suspected to have received a massive amount of contaminated fill not have be prioritized?
